The Weekend Guide….

With less than 72 hours to go, celebs are being prepped and primped for the *1st Annual Academy Awards. Tents have been erected on the Red Carpet in anticipation for rain. The Academy has even Oscar fans a step by step update of the evenings events. From the construction outside the Kodak theater right down to the decor and theme for the Governor’s Ball.
Obviously, I’ll be tuning in for the Red Carpet festivities hosted by ‘Project Runway’ style guru Tim Gunn and ‘Good Morning America’ anchor Robin Roberts. I absolutely adore Tim Gunn’s take on style and look forward to his take on Oscar looks. I’m not a huge fan of Robin Robert”s fashion sense or lack there of…. In the past few years we’ve seen her go from drab to fab before our very own eyes. Her signature close cropped mane as the result of her battle with cancer has created a buzz for the anchor in the fashion world.

Designer Gilles Mendel and Suze Yalof Schwartz, executive editor at large of Glamour magazine, joined Robin Roberts to help her pick out the perfect Oscar-worthy gown.

“Good Morning America” asked its viewers Wednesday to weigh in on Robin’s Oscar dress choices. More than 7,000 viewers lent their opinion for or against one of Robin’s final three dresses. The decision still has not been made and Robin still needs your help. Check out the dresses and vote here.

Sweet Valentine’s Tips of the Day….

Whether you’re planning a Valentine’s Getaway or a quiet evening at home, everyone knows that sizzle can fizzle if you don’t make sure you’re breath is fresh and kissable!
Dr. Dan Smith, a reputable dentist based in the Los Angeles area sees an influx of patients looking for advice on how to keep their breath minty fresh before a big Valentine’s Day date. Below you’ll find some of Dr. Smith’s simple tips that can help you assure you won’t be told to kiss-off on Valentine’s Day…..

Dr. Smith’s Date Night Advice

When Placing Your Order…
Meat eaten in large quantities can cause bad breath, mostly due to the digestion process, which begins in the mouth.
Carbohydrates cause the strongest odors in the mouth – sugars, starches, and cellulose
Milk intolerance is also a cause of bad breath. If you are sensitive to dairy products – steer clear of ice cream desserts!

After Your Meal…
Lick the inside of your wrist. This is the best test to see if your breath is foul.
Use dental floss. Bad breath can be caused by food caught in your teeth.
Chew your garnish! Parsley is a well-known home remedy for bad breath.
Order the fruit dessert. Fresh fruits help cleanse the mouth after a meal and flush away odor-causing bacteria

At the Bar…
Alcohol dries out the mouth, which reduces saliva production.
Mojitos contain lots of fresh mint, so order one and ask for an extra mint garnish to chew on after you finish your drink.
Water will help thwart the dehydration effect of alcohol. Order one glass of water for every drink and you’ll stay sober and sweet!
Alcohol consumption causes digestive problems which leads to bad breath. In addition, alcohol dries out the mouth, which reduces saliva production.

The Weekend Guide….

Are you still recovering from the stress of the holiday season?? Need a lil’ lift from the winter blues….Well, if a Swedish massage, hot stone massage or water treatment suits your fancy you may be in need of a spa day!!!
And because fashionistas struggle to keep it together while looking fabulous & chic, I’ve compiled a few tips courtesy of the snazzy folks at ShopSmart (March 2009) to guide through your fabulous Spa fix in this tight economy.
  • Call spas and ask, ‘What specials are you offering?’ Inquire about off-season deals, cost-cutting packages, specials for new clients and whether certain days or times are cheaper than others. And don’t be afraid to admit that you’re looking for a deal.
  • Try chain massage stores. The décor usually isn’t too fancy and chains are prone to staffing turnover, but the savings can be big. Massage Envy, for example, has more than 500 storefront locations nationwide and employs only certified therapists. As a member, you get one monthly massage for $49 to $59 per month (depending on location) with additional massages that month costing $39 to $49 each.
  • Visit Spa schools. Most cosmetology and massage therapy schools offer a student spa/salon or clinic where treatments are done under the supervision of instructors at a fraction of the price. Search the Web sites of the American Association of Cosmetology Schools (http://www.careersinbeauty.org/) or the American Massage Therapy Association (http://www.amtamassage.org/).
  • Consider Costco! The discount warehouse sells two $50 SpaFinder gift certificates for $79.99, a 20 percent savings, which can be used for treatments (including discounted ones) at any spa in the SpaFinder network.
  • Search the Web. Sites like Spafinder.com, Spamagazine.com, Lifebooker.com, SpaWeek.org and Spa-addicts.com post special deals. At Google, type in your city name and “spa discount” to find promotions, or sign up for your favorite spa’s e-mail alerts on specials.
  • Buy in bulk. You might be able to purchase a series of treatments—say, six for the price of five—to be used within a specified amount of time. Some spas offer a frequent-user card and the 10th visit is free.
  • Ask about product deals. As spas make the transition from one season to another or change product lines, they often offer specials. These types of specials are here one day and gone the next, and they aren’t posted online, so call the front desk to ask.
Don’t forget to check out the March issue of ShopSmart magazine for additional money saving tips on closet organization, fashion, lifestyle and more…….
And remember, Spa Finder offers a comprehensive listing of spas including day spas, vacation spas, medical spas, and spa treatments across the globe.

As a busy mom of two of the sweetest lil’ cupcakes in town there’s little time for luxurious trips to the spa. In between wiping sniffly noses and learning the latest dance moves courtesy of my 7 year old, I make some me time after they’ve gone to bed by pouring myself a cup of tea, rifling through my subscriptions of fashion magazines, a sensuous bubble bath and the alluring glow of Chesapeake Bay Votives to illuminate my personal spa retreat.

The Weekend Guide….

This week’s Weekend Guide is dedicated to the spirit of giving…..
Because Giving Back is Always Chic!
Bird Holiday Coat Drive
Before you toss your old or boring winter coat in the company donation bin, consider this…. Through December 31st, the clothing boutique chain Bird will be helping out New York Cares with a cool promo, where you can donate a used winter coat and receive $25 off the price of a new coat. Take advantage of these stellar savings at any of Bird’s three Brooklyn locations.
Give a little this December with help from swanky eatery Tempo in Park Slope. When you dine there any Saturday this month, the restaurant will donate the full value of your bill to the Modest Needs Foundation, a charity helping the poor. Even if you’re a total Scrooge, think of it this way—you get a tax write off (ask your waiter for details), and you get an awesome meal out of it.

On a lighter note…….
Due to the looming recession, organizations like

The U.S. Marines Toys for Tots are in desperate need for toy donations this year. Each year The Tres Chic Foundation host a children’s holiday party for deserving youngsters in the Bedford Stuyvesant community of Brooklyn, NY. With the assistance of generous donations like the Toys for Tots organization we are able to share in the joys of the season with hundreds of underprivileged children. I’ve been involved in toy donations for many years and this is the first time my organization has ever been faced with this dilemma. So if you can, why not help put a smile on a youngster’s face this holiday season!

Donating is simple….
  1. Contact your local Toys for Tots campaign office for drop-off locations
  2. You can Donate On-Line
  3. Or head over to your local Toys R Us or Babies R Us and drop off a toy in their drop-box.

Chic Holiday Hostess Gifts…..

This holiday season, many fashionistas will be invited to a dinner or gathering. Some may even be staying overnight at a friend or family member’s home. A great way to show your appreciation for the work and effort put forth by the hostess is to bring a hostess gift.
While hostess gifts are certainly not mandatory, they are thoughtful and oh so chic…..
  • Chocolates- you can never go wrong with chocolates….
  • Picture Frame- Almost every hostess would enjoy a beautiful picture frame. If you know your hostess well, choose a frame that will compliment her décor.
  • Wine- tried tested and true…. An ordinary bottle would be a little dull and boring, so spice it up with some sassy wrap and a cute gift card.
  • Gourmet Tea or Coffees- Opt for a gift basket or assemble your favorites with a ceramic mug and decorative wrap.

Trader Joe’s Hits Brooklyn….

While the weather isn’t favorable in the city right now. There’s always a reason to go shopping! My 2nd BFF (yes I have two) Fedrecia and I set out tonight to visit the new Trader Joe’s in Brooklyn. She’s always introducing me to her latest Trader Joe’s snacks.
Since I love entertaining, I thought maybe I’d go give it a looksie.
After circling the block for what seemed like an hour we lucked up on a spot near Smith & Wycoff (just two blocks away). As we walked from the car we could see locals schlepping through the rain with their Trader Joe’s recyclable bags in tow.
To my amazement the former home of Independence Savings Bank was transformed into a gourmet foodie oasis complete with a friendly staff and aisle filled with goodies.

Fedrecia was delighted to snag some 39 cents oranges..

I absolutely adore sweet treats so the frozen dessert section was my first stop. Joe’s peppermint cheesecake, chocolate lava cake, pecan sticky buns, creme brulee, raspberry tarts and Ben & Jerry’s Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough (Quart, $4.49) the treats were divine… On the other side you could find Enchiladas, Quiche, Buffalo Wings alongside Mango Chutney and Ciabatta bread.
The Trader Joe’s philosophy is that if you take a product home and decide it’s not to your liking you can simply bring it back for a full refund and they promise “Not to Break Your Chops” about it….
I am totally sold and quickly planning my next adventure in the treasure chest of Trader Joe’s…

Opening day brought the crowd out, however the lines moved pretty quickly….

Who can’t resist a nineteen cents banana….

And yet another happy shopper….

Clad in his Hawaiian shirt, our cashier Christopher showed us how it’s really done at Trader Joe’s.

The Weekend Guide…..

A fashionista has had a loooooong week. As I mentioned earlier, the kids are back to school and I’m still getting them adjusted, with their schedules as well as dealing with the loss of a dear friend and mentor. Tres Chic Style is very much a part of my life. While I’ve been hard at work restructuring the Tres Chic Brand and concentrating on my latest philanthropic ventures I’ve had little time to update my fiercely loyal readers about the latest in fashion, celebrity news and style advice. I apologize for my absence but assure you of my commitment to this fabulous blog.
The holidays are quickly approaching and I’ve already begun to compile my Holiday Favorites List. We are so looking forward to our 2nd Annual Tres Chic Style 12 Days of a Chic Christmas” Holiday Contest. Details and information will be posted soon.
As I attempt to unwind this weekend, I thought I’d share some fab weekend treats with you…..
Why: A Tyler Perry movie can always make you smile, laugh and cry (usually in that order)
Shop: Target Pop-Up Bodegas
Fashionistas, set your alarms and be prepared to fight the crowds for the chance to score serious savings at the Target Pop Up stores, featuring 22 designer collaborations.
When: 9/12
Where: Broome St. (West Broadway & Wooster St.)
*Other locations include 57th Street and 6th Avenue, Broadway between 11th and 12th Streets, and Bowery and 2nd Street.
Indulge: Try a Coloring Book Cocktail this weekend….
Why: Honestly, Do you really need a reason….
What: The cocktail (pictured above) looks like a work of art, which is fitting because it was concocted in honor of a famous work of art.
To capture the child like spirit of the piece colored cubes of Jell-O are added. The colorful cubes contain vodka, tequila, triplesec, rum, gin and Sprite to create a drink that tastes like a sweet Long Island Iced Tea.
Delish…..
